It was dark when Paul awoke.

He groaned and glanced at his clock.

2:30 am.

The lamp was still trying to illuminate the room, but without assistance from the sun, it was barely succeeding.

Paul got up to turn off the lamp. His mother must have already turned off his stereo. He relieved the overly-worked lamp from its duty, and began to remove his clothes.

A muffled scream forced its way through his door.

Pulling his shirt back down, he grabbed a baseball bat and rushed to his mother’s room, prepared to beat away the attacking guests.

Mrs. Norton lay asleep in her bed.

The muffled scream reached him again, this he could tell it was coming from the guest room. Paul stared down the hallway. The door was slightly ajar, and another struggling light was limping through the crack. He crept to the door, and peered through the crack.

Pike and Doctor stood over the bed, holding down Jacque. Doctor leaned over Jacque, and pressed something against his neck. Jacque screamed again, biting down on leather.

“Is it enough?” Pike whispered.

“No.” Paul expected the word to be coming from doctor, and at first that was what he heard. But it was Jacque that said “no.” I was Jacque that said, “Keep going.” It was Jacque that screamed into the leather another five times before they stopped. And it was Jacque that said “It is good for now.”

Paul heard someone breathing heavily, the sound arguing with the silence of the night. He realized the sound was coming from him and stopped.

“Are we ready?” Jacque spoke, still in pain.

“Yes,” Doctor agreed. “Let’s get it over with. Pike?”

“Let’s go.”

Paul hurried back to his room and shut the door. He listened to the men creep down the stairs, and waited the back door open and close. When he was satisfied, he followed.

He stood at the back door and watched through the glass.

Pike and Jacque had grabbed the litter, and were dragging it. Doctor ran ahead to the tree line. He peered into the trees, looking for something. Satisfied with what he saw, he reached down and picked up one of the crackers. Pike and Jacque dragged the litter past Doctor and into the trees. Doctor dropped the cracker back onto the ground, and disappeared into the forest after the others.

Paul slipped out of the door, and silently closed it behind him. If he was going to call the police, he would have to be able to say where the body was.

He crept down the back porch stairs, the sound of his footsteps drowned out by the mournful chorus of insects. The fours horses tied to his porch watched him walk past. The mare that had taken to him so quickly shuddered and stomped.

“Quiet, girl.” Paul whispered. “I’ll be right back.”

The moon slipped behind a cloud, bathing the world in the darkness of a cavern.

Paul used the darkness to the sprint to the tree line.

The moon escaped the cobweb cloud, returning to light the world.

His ears and eyes strained for some sign to show him where the men had gone.
